The Reality of a Dream

I just woke up and I had to start writing. I had a dream last night that I was surfing this weird break that had this side wave on it. I didn’t really get any good ones, but it was really fun to surf it. I was out there with a couple other guys and we eventually went in. When I got in my friend Gil was fishing at the same beach, and from that point of view it looked liked Sugar Beach. I am not even sure, now that I think of it, if Gil even fishes, but in my dream he was fishing. And in my dream he had fished for a long time and had not caught anything in a long time. This day he finally caught something and I was stoked for him. As I got closer the fish got bigger and when I got right up next to it, it was a 4-5 foot shark, I think it was a tiger or great white not really sure. Gil was still fishing and there were still people out in the water swimming. Gil took a spear and stabbed the shark and put it through him and killed it, put it out of its misery.
I am not really sure why? It is not something that I would have done. Being in the ocean so much and being from Hawaii where sharks are considered Hamakua, our ancestors, I think anyway, it would be hard to kill a shark, just bad karma. On the beach I thought about making shark fin soup, I joked to Gil about it, but then I thought about it some more and am not sure if I would want to eat it.
I am not sure what the dream meant, but I am sure it was a compilation of my most recent interactions with people. I think Gil was actually Anthony; he does fish and actually caught a nice fish the other day. The shark came from my conversations with people about the recent shark attack that happened here at Sidewalks. It seems like every month there is a new explanation of why there have been so many shark attacks, especially on the south side of Maui. Some people have been saying it is pollution, some people say it was a ten year migration, but that was last year and it’s still happening. Now people are saying it’s the stand up paddle boarders, really? I am not sure what it is, could just be the waters are getting over fished and there is not as much food for them, but they are doing a study, so maybe something will come of it.
On another note I really want to interview Kelly Slater, when I go over to Oahu. It could possibly be his last year on tour and the title will be crowned, so it will be really good footage to get for the documentary. I can also surf a bunch while I am over there and possibly see a previous girlfriend of mine, but am a little unsure because usually that leads to only one thing, and right now I am kind of digging this other girl. So we will see what mother nature does if it brings swell in the beginning of the waiting period I will for sure go early, if not I’ll go later, or maybe before, haha.
While I am over there I also want to interview Ian Masterson, the guy who I took the tow class from. The class was super interesting and from what he said it helps me better to understand why I am making this film, and why I surf. In the class he had mentioned how much surfing was part of the Hawaiian Culture back in the day. How many words there were describing water and surf related things. He also talked about surfing being a person’s way to show off their skills, that they were able to tame the beast we call the ocean. Growing up in Hawaii I guess it got ingrained in me, along with my natural traits that I was god given, so in a way this film is paying homage also to my Hawaiian Heritage. Showing the world about surfing, how to flow with the ocean, and life, as I think the Hawaiians were totally down for doing. I would like to interview Ian and pick his brain a little more about this.
Now to talk about my god father Randy. HE COMMUNICATED BACK TO ME, SO STOKED! His stepdaughter sent me a text message back on Thanksgiving it was great to hear from him and such a good day. She said that he misses me, thinks about me and loves me. He never really said that much even when we were together, so it made me feel really good when it was in the text message. She said that he couldn’t really talk because he is still sick, but is getting better. I pretty amazed that this all worked so fast. It was just two weeks ago when I had a hypnotherapy session and spoke to him in a deep state of meditation. I imagined him writing me back, or picking up the phone and calling. The session was really intense.
About a week later I called and like usual I left a message for him. Then I actually sat down and wrote a letter to him a long one, the one in my earlier blog. About a week later I heard from him. I had tried to call him many times before, but to no avail. It is quite an interesting experience and I want to go back to my hypnotherapist and do another session.
That’s all for now, check back soon.
